On-Equally Yoked.

Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? 2 Corinthians 6:14

A few weeks ago, as always, a conversation broke out on X, formerly Twitter, about dating or marrying a person of another faith, as a Christian.

This conversation, while necessary, has/is/and will always be an indictment on our churches and religious leaders, in this case, pastors and parents, because this should be something your daddy, mummy and Sunday school teacher should explain why the bible says you shouldn’t be unequally yoked in marriage.

Proverbs 22:6 – “Train up a child in the way he should go: And when he is old, he will not depart from it.

The first argument against unequal yokes is the difference in religious convictions and systems. I lived with my stepmom, a Muslim, for a few months, and I understood firsthand why the rule existed in the first place. How will you handle the difference in religious requirements and obligations, as not upholding them counts as a sin to your partner??

You, as a Christian, performing the Ghusl (Janaba bath) after every sexual encounter and at the end of every menstrual cycle, waking up every day for a month at 2:30 am to prepare food for your partner during Ramadan, and so many other things, I might have forgotten. You, as a Christian, performing the Ghusl (Janaba bath) after every sexual encounter and at the end of every menstrual cycle, waking up every day for a month at 2:30 am to prepare food for your partner during Ramadan, and so many other things, I might have forgotten.

Also, do not forget that you have your own religious convictions to uphold as well. While they may not be binding on your partner, they will surely affect your interaction. How do you even plan to hear God when the one who should help you chase the ten thousand is running in the opposite direction??

Amos 3:3 Can two walk together, except they agree??

The second argument is one that, while I’ve known it instinctively for years, I do not have a name for it or words to properly explain it until my Pastor touched it mid-sermon. Now, you are married to your sweetheart of another religion, you have beautiful kids, what values/religion would you pass down to them??

What would your kids identify as: Christian, Muslim, Traditionalist or Atheist?? Keeping in mind that your kids are 1. a gift from God and 2. a responsibility you’ll account for on the final day, just as an armed officer accounts for his assigned weaponry at the end of his duty.

Psalm 127:4 As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man, so are children of the youth.

What would you do when, not if, the answers you and your spouse give to your kids’ questions about life, values, and religion are as different as day and night??

What lifestyle choices would your family portray?

Joshua 24:15 …but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

Who, or what, is your family serving??

Song Of The Week

Olulana (Live in Lagos) by Gaise Baba, is a very beautiful piece.

I get this calm when I listen to it, like someone is beside me telling me to calm down and let God do His part. You too, let God handle it this week.
